A .WAV file is a file that contains sound information mainly used in Windows systems for storing uncompressed audio data.

Wav files do not usually support any kind of compression, so they are rather large in size but offer a high quality level.

Unfortunately they are not suitable for audio content distribution over the Internet, that's why compression technologies, like MP3 and MP4 were born.
